In agreement with these findings, acetaldehyde treatment downregulated the expression of glucose transporter 1 ( Glut1 ) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 ( Hif-1a ) (figure 4B), both are critical for aerobic glycolysis.29-31 Furthermore, we analysed the glucose uptake by T cells by staining 2-[ N -(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl)amino]-2-deoxy-d-glucose (a fluorescent glucose analogue) and found that the fluorescence intensities in total T, CD4 + and CD8 + T cells were lower in acetaldehyde-treated cells than those in PBS-treated cells (figure 4C)
