This oil painting by Slater is unusual in that it is inscribed by the artist on the front of the painting bottom left with the title and the date 15th April 1903

James Alder was the artist and writer of a very popular weekly series of nature articles in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle which ran for 20 years from 1950

He was a fluent French speaker who loved working in France
