Baule Cloth Cushion (83.2.B69) Sculpture using age-old techniques passed downThis cushion is made from pagne Baoul, the prized handwoven cloth of Cte d'Ivoire. Named for the Baoul, an Akan people, its roots reach back to the 16th century Ashanti Kingdom that stretched across what is now Ghana and Cte d'Ivoire. For centuries the cloth has been worn at gatherings, ceremonies and festivities, and in weaving towns such as Sakiar it remains a way of life. Each cushion is hand stitched from individual strips of the cloth, so every
